This past weekend at the Southern Exposure Camp in Atlanta, one athlete stole the show from the moment he stepped onto the field — Skylar Alston, a standout 2028 linebacker from Cardinal Gibbons High School (NC), who walked away with the coveted Overall Camp MVP honors.
Alston, already regarded as one of the most versatile defensive prospects in the country, made headlines before drills even began. Instead of participating in traditional linebacker activities, he made the bold decision to compete as a defensive back — a challenge he embraced with authority.
From the very first rep, Alston’s presence was undeniable. Lined up against top receivers in the secondary, he used his long, rangy frame and elite physicality at the line of scrimmage to disrupt timing routes and shut down passing lanes. Quarterbacks were reluctant to throw in his direction, and for good reason — his instincts and coverage skills looked every bit as sharp as seasoned defensive backs.
“Skylar didn’t just show up — he made a statement,” said one camp evaluator. “To switch positions and dominate like that, it speaks volumes about his athleticism and mindset.”
Alston’s performance comes as no surprise to recruiters. He currently holds over 15 Division I offers, including powerhouse programs like Ohio State, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Penn State. His ability to impact the game from multiple spots on the field has solidified his status as one of the most sought-after prospects in the 2028 class.
With the season ahead, all eyes will be on Cardinal Gibbons and their rising star. If this weekend’s performance was any indication, Skylar Alston is just getting started.
