In the heart of North Carolina at Hough High School, a multi-sport standout is steadily gaining attention across the nation. Ethan Royal, a dynamic 6-foot-2, 195-pound athlete from the Class of 2027, is redefining what it means to be a student-athlete—on and off the field.
Royal, who excels in football, baseball, and basketball, is not just a triple-threat athlete. He is also a proud Native American and an active member of the Coharie tribe. When he’s not making big plays on the gridiron or the court, Ethan finds peace and joy in singing and drumming with the Smokey River Singers, a local Coharie drum group that helps him stay connected to his roots.
A Leader on the Field
Though Royal thrives in three sports, it’s on the football field where he’s beginning to draw the most attention. With a rare blend of size, speed, and football IQ, he’s already caught the eyes of Division I programs across the country. His current list of offers includes Arkansas, UAB, App State, ECU, Campbell, and Gardner-Webb, with more expected to follow as he enters his junior season.
Royal’s schools of interests include South Carolina, Penn State, and Virginia—programs known not only for competitive football but also for strong academic support and campus culture.
Inspired by Champions
A big fan of 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, Royal models his game and leadership style after the dynamic quarterback.
But Ethan’s most important mentors are close to home. Coaches Deshaun Baker and Chachi Sullivan have both played vital roles in his development on and off the field. “They’ve both been there through everything,” Royal said. “They’ve pushed me, taught me, believed in me. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.”
More Than an Athlete
A top student whose favorite subject is math, Royal understands the importance of balance. Whether he’s analyzing defensive schemes or solving algebra problems, his mental sharpness sets him apart. Teachers and coaches alike describe him as humble, driven, and focused.
The Road Ahead
With two more high school seasons to go, the ceiling is sky-high for Ethan Royal. Whether he’s breaking tackles on Friday night, hitting home runs in the spring, or leading his team on the basketball court, one thing is clear: Royal isn’t just playing the game—he’s changing it.
